Pest and vermin control in the North West has seen a lively start in 2010 which is rather surprising given the somewhat cold (weather of this last winter|winter of 2009/10}.

Pest and Vermin controllers were kept occupied with the usual town centre rats and mice infestations during the winter of 2009/10, but the relatively cold late winter has already brought some ant infestations reported.

The damp summers of the last few years were not to the benefit of the hymenoptera (wasps, bees and ants) but this year looks like it will be a busy year for flying ant callouts.

Regularly ants nest under the floors of houses and inside cavity walls causing a large number of foraging ants to visit kitchens and food cupboards.

However it is at the annual mating time when they can be most troublesome as they release winged males and queens which then fly off to mate.

The release of thousands of these flying ants inside houses can be horrible indeed.

A relatively new pest was very numerous in the Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire area last season, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).

It was rare for pest controllers in Lancashire, Manchester and Cheshire to deal with these pests until recent times but they seemed to arrive from nowhere in recent times and already this spring has seen sightings of these insects in large numbers.

These beetles have a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, known as woolly bears devour natural fibres and can do a great deal of damage to carpets and some fabrics. They are a difficult and tricky pest to remove.

Those who ar einvolved in pest control note that Bed Bugs are carrying on their come back in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area, often arriving as stowaways in the suitcases of home-coming holiday makers.

Often the first reaction of those unfortunates who realise that they are infested with these hideous,blood-sucking insects is to get rid of the old beds and get.

This is an unneccesary error as despite their name bed bugs do not just live in beds and in an infested bedroom will be found anywhere within up to five yards of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical sockets and the new beds become quickly re-infested.

Many people mistake bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye. They both a different type of gatley pest control.

They dine exclusively on blood which they syphon from their sleeping victims. People usually associate bed bugs with dirty conditions but nothing could be further from the truth, they do not need squalor, they dine on you!
